Your moving house checklist
With house prices predicted to rise in 2025, confidence has been growing among sellers. Due to the recent Stamp Duty changes, there’s also been an urgency among homebuyers to complete in the last financial quarter of this year. If you’re preparing to put your property up for sale, our moving house checklist will help you get your home ready.
How to prepare your home for viewings
We have shared a guide below to the steps you should take when preparing your home for viewings:
- First impressions are vital. When it comes to viewing a property. Make sure the front of your home is in good condition, including the paintwork on doors and windows. Keep your driveway and front garden tidy to increase kerb appeal.
- Make sure each room is uncluttered. Inside your home, it’s important to clear away any unnecessary belongings that might affect how a prospective buyer views your home. A tidy room with minimal possessions will help them to picture their own future life in your property.
- If you have pets, put them away for viewings. If the visitor loves animals, then your pet’s presence might be a distraction. However, if they aren’t an animal lover, they could be put off from buying.
- There’s no point renovating your home just before you sell. Don’t refurbish but do replace any broken fittings and fixtures to ensure everything’s in good, working condition. If you have a dull or darkly painted room, you could consider repainting in a lighter colour. Neutral and light wall colours can make rooms appear larger.
‘Freshen-upper’ homes are popular
Most people like to make their own mark on their new home, decorating in their own style.
According to research by Jackson-Stops, around 49% of prospective buyers are looking for a ‘freshen-upper’ property. This is a home that only requires improvements on a small scale and is currently one of the most desirable types of property. Only 16% of buyers expressed an interest in ‘fixer uppers’, which marks a shift away from major renovation projects.
However, a ‘move-in ready’ property is also popular among 22% of home movers, especially if its energy efficient. 27% of survey respondents advised they didn’t have time to make significant improvements to a home. This highlights the impact of people’s busy lifestyles on their homebuying preferences.
